Serving the Needs of our Veterans During a Global Pandemic

Veterans Life Center

At such a challenging time in history, it is no surprise the needs of many in our communities continue to grow. There are those who devote their lives to serving us as a nation. But what happens when those who have given so much are in need, and how do we give back to them? Here is how HTI met the needs of a small group of veterans, because saying ‘thank you’ never feels quite like enough.

The Veterans Life Center in Butner, NC is a residential facility designed to help at risk 21st Century male and female service members. The goal of the center is to provide each resident with the prospect of a positive, constructive and satisfying role in civil society. VLC guides residents to career opportunities and community reintegration with programs designed to rebuild residents in need of mental and physical health support and improve life skills by providing vocational and other training. Thus avoiding crises such as homelessness, incarceration, suicide and premature/preventative death.

The concept to build such a facility was formed by a small group of young veterans with no experience or funding. They earned the respect and support of local, state and federal leaders by relentlessly pushing through the many roadblocks and closed doors they encountered. Determination paid off as the group celebrated the grand opening of the center on Aug. 1.

The Butner facility has over 100 beds; mostly in double rooms, with showers and bathroom facilities in each of the four wing, full commercial kitchen, dining room, a large multi-purpose room, two day rooms, library, computer lab, conference room, physical fitness room, store, dispensary, nurse/first aid, two laundry rooms along with office space for the staff of 30 plus make this location not only functional but quite impressive.

On Sept. 10, HTI was overjoyed to add to the success of VLC by donating five Google Chromebooks to help equip the residents with the ability to create resumes, apply for jobs, keep in touch with family and friends, and feel like a valued member of society by gaining access to all information available on the worldwide web. We consider it an honor to play even a small part in the future of each resident who will use a Chromebook to take the next step in building a successful future. HTI looks forward to receiving testimonials on how the donations are benefiting the Veterans and look forward to a continued relationship with the VLC.
