HTI – Making a Difference for the Earth and Your Community

admin

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead

April 22, 2020 marks the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day! Join us to help save the earth. You can make a difference, more than you know. Donating laptops to HUBZone Technology Initiative (HTI), not only reduces the amount of e-waste going to landfills, but you will make a difference in the lives of people within your own community.

HTI receives donated laptops and converts them into Google Chromebooks to distribute to educational institutions and community organizations in historically underutilized business (HUBZone) areas. The recent outbreak of COVID-19 has closed schools and brought to light the lack of access to computers for some students. HTI is working in partnership with community organizations, to get laptops into the hands of students in need as quickly as possible.

Laptops are also donated to unemployed and underemployed people in HUBZone communities. Having access to up-to-date technology provides limitless educational and career opportunities for those utilizing these technology resources. To further contribute to the economic growth in HUBZone communities, HTI also hires a percentage of employees from each of the local areas served.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s website, “Recycling one million laptops saves the energy equivalent to the electricity used by more than 3,500 US homes in a year.” Energy is also saved by reusing laptops, so materials used to make laptops are not having to be mined to create new products.

Donating laptops is a simple way for you to help save the earth and help people in your community. You can donate any laptop, as long as the screen and keyboard are in complete functioning order, and the laptop has the ability to power on and off. Before laptops are donated, a technician will wipe the laptop’s memory clean and install software to convert it into a useful Google Chromebook. This will ensure that absolutely no private information is stored or shared.

To date, HTI has donated over 150 laptops to organizations across North Carolina and it is our goal to make a huge impact during the COVID-19 pandemic. Reusing laptops makes a difference in the lives of individuals and saves the earth by keeping laptops out of landfills. Together we can all make a difference this earth day and every day!
